So we arrived to Washington-Dulles and are not allowed to leave the plane and it takes another 30 - 40 minutes before the bathrooms are "fixed" or moreless serviced. So the picture shown here in this article is the line formed for the front bathroom which looked identical to the one in the back. After about 15 minutes later, JetBlue announces that everyone should get back into their seats unless it was an emergency in order to get back on course.

A guy sitting maybe about two rows back on the other side from me, had such an emergency but when he went up to the front of the plane the flight attendant told him to go back to his seat which he frankly refused and went into the bathroom anyway. Once the guy used the bathroom and went back to his seat, the flight attendant came to his seat to express her dissatisifaction and then called her supervisor to request him off of the plane. So like 10 minutues later, finally the supervisor comes and talks to the guy and the surrounding other passengers which all expressed their dissatisifaction of the flight attendant handling of this situation and also the wasting of time over this while passengers could have been still going to the bathrooms.

The supervisor does listen to the passengers and the guy is not thrown off of the plane and we proceed to prepare for our departure. A Bumpy take off only delays further before the remainder of folks could use the bathrooms but we finally arrived into the Orlando at 9:30 PM instead of the original time of 7:06 PM.

As we were existing out of the jetway tunnel into the terminal, a JetBlue representative was handing out a $50 coupon off notification for the next flight on JetBlue.

Personally for me, this is the third time, I have ever flown with JetBlue but each time it has been a bad experience so for me they can have their $50 credit. I plan not to fly with them again. Lastly, I believe that this could have avoided if they just did the proper servicing of their bathrooms versus trying to push back ahead of/ or on schedule.

Many of you may recall that in 2001, Diane Hill Thomas (wife of Lazarus Nelson Thomas) commuted on a weekly basis from Virginia to downtown New York City for a high-profile consulting position she held at the time. While walking to work on a gorgeous Tuesday morning, the unthinkable occurred. Commercial airplanes slammed into the two majestic high-rise World Trade Center towers. Simultaneously in other parts of our county, another commercial plane crashed into the Pentagon and yet another flight was reportedly headed toward the White House. It was clear that on September 11, 2001 our country was under attack.

Suddenly and without warning, Diane found herself in the midst of chaos. Disoriented from the towers having collapsed, traumatized from seeing those trapped in buildings jumping from stories impossible to survive and covered in debris from the destruction, she was unsure she would survive. The days’ events had also left her paralyzed without access to cash or credit cards and unable to use her phone to call for help.

With nowhere to go and no one to protect or comfort her, she found herself seemingly alone. We say seemingly because like several African languages with no existing word for “alone,” she had something that not everyone is blessed to have: a strong, loving, supportive and active family.

As did many families on that tragic day, ours began roll call; circling the wagons to determine if we were all safe accounted for – particularly those closest to attack sites. It took less than an hour to discover that Diane was missing. The family immediately sprung into action. Today we can only describe what subsequently transpired as divine intervention. With relentless resolve, the family began looking for Diane. Fighting through spotty phone service, a series of calls to any and everyone with even an iota of information revealed that Diane had managed to find her way to safety at a hotel at Ground Zero. That key piece of information was all we needed to send the nearest family member, Shareese Thompson, aka Sha (Nelson’s niece) to collect our loved one.

With no access to Ground Zero, Sha’s attempts to bring Diane to safety were proving to be an uphill battle. But the family had made it abundantly clear that bringing Diane to safety was the only option. With reports of unstable buildings and leaking gas lines, Sha too was scared, but also not alone. Whenever roadblocks (both literal and physical) occurred, she called the family for support and direction. Lisa Hastye (Nelson’s cousin) played a pivotal roll in making sure Sha remained informed, calm and on task. Even those family members more tangential to the events became fierce prayer warriors.

It was this entire family effort that changed what seemed to be a dead end in getting Diane to safety. The heighten security at Ground Zero left Sha with no access to the hotel where Diane had found shelter. Diane had no idea that she had been located let alone that anyone was coming for her. And while she was physically close, Sha had hit a wall. Only the power of prayer could have influenced a nameless police officer who had previously denied her access to suddenly lower the police line and allow Sha to enter Ground Zero to recover her aunt. Thank you prayer warriors!

Although visibly shaken and clearly in shock, Diane walked out of a completely obliterated Ground Zero unharmed.

Family, each year as we reflect on the events of September 11, it is important for us to always remember that even in the midst of tragedy we are blessed and highly favored, and indeed we are NEVER alone. Let us continue to grow strong vines from our deep roots.
